Castilla y León

Castilla y León is a protected geographical indication used to designate local wines made from grapes grown in the autonomous community of Castilla y León , Spain . Under this protected indication, red, white and rosé wines are produced in 317 towns in the provinces of Ávila, Burgos, León, Palencia, Salamanca, Segovia, Soria, Valladolid and Zamora.

A continental Mediterranean climate with little rainfall, together with the diversity of soils are the most notable characteristics of the region, which broadly coincides with the Duero basin or northern sub-plateau , together with the mountainous perimeter that surrounds it. 2

This figure includes vineyards within the Castilian-Leonese designations of origin, in Vino de la Tierra mentions, or producers with the right to use the geographical mention.

However, wines produced in Castilla y León but which already have their own designation of origin are not included in the Wines of the Land of Castilla y León. For example, DO Bierzo , DO Tierras de León , DO Toro , DO Cigales , DO Ribera del Duero , etc.

The geographical indication Castilla y León has been registered with the European Union since April 16, 2004. 4 Since June 22, 2021, it has also been registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization
